The Ready Seniors Workshop grew out of a recognition that older adults frequently suffer disproportionately during disasters. The majority of the victims of the 2017 California wildfires were age 70 or older, and older adults accounted for more than 70 percent of the Hurricane Katrina deaths, despite the fact that those age 60 and older accounted for only 15 percent of the area’s population.
Increasingly, frail older adults with complex health issues live alone in the community, far from their relatives and caregivers. An older adult’s dependency upon service providers for basic necessities and psychosocial support often increases his/her vulnerability to the impacts of major disasters, when not only is the senior impacted, but these critical services also are disrupted. FEMA Region II and the Administration for Community Living have partnered to address this disparity through a workshop aimed at preparing AAAs and other organizations that provide critical support services to senior citizens in their communities.
